What is 'Empty Nest Syndrome?'

When a parent's child or children leave for the first time and are left with feelings of loneliness or sadness. Children who leave the home are usually going off to university, college, or moving into their own home. 

Women are more likely to have this issue since the majority of the time, they are the main caregiver. 

Symptoms and Effects

  • A loss of purpose
  • Depression
  • Reflection on parenting
  • Questioning if their child is ready to leave
  • Feeling rejected
  • Feeling of lost opportunities with children

Empty Nest Syndrome is usually confused with regret towards their partner. With so much time dedicated to the children they have raised and little time with husband, it is easy to see the "man you loved" as a stranger. To avoid this from happening, Although a lot of marriages are ended after the children have left, some are also given a new light.
